Thailand advice please.

I've been on holiday to Thailand a few times, the last being Ko Chang about 3 0r 4 years ago before it all seriously kicked off with the red shirts and yellow shirts. We were in Bangkok a few months before the big flood.

I know some of you boys live out there or visit frequently so where better to ask than here? So, is it still a safe place to go on holiday with my missus and if it is, where would be nice and not too touristy?

One of my pals says Canchanapuri (sp?) is lovely and another says it's a mosquito-infested shithole. He says Chiang Rai is the place to go.

So, safe or should we swerve and go somewhere else? I'll be sad if it's not safe as I love Thailand and think the Thai people are on the whole a nice bunch. They seem to have a good sense of humour and when something goes wrong do what we do- laugh their bollocks off and shrug their shoulders.

My Patpong and Soi Cowboy days are over (to be honest they never really started). I want nice scenery, a bit of peace and quiet, a jungle curry and a cold Chang. Getting shot in the face I can live without.

Yes have been to Hua Hin a couple of times but only for 3 or 4 days at a time. Very nice place in my opinion but have only ever stayed in and around the town and so know nothing about the other areas of interest nearby that Wanderlust mentions.

If you do go try and find a hotel close to the centre and some that are advertised as Hua Hin Hotels/ Resorts are a long way out of town.

Yea must be about that. Never been around there, but depending on what you are looking for it will be a lot less commercial.

We've been toying with the idea of a holiday to Hua Hin..would 10 days there be too much I get bored quickly. June, July too hot pah!

I went to Kanchanburi in 2006. Hired a taxi for the day for about £40. He took us to the Tiger Temple (when it was still relatively unknown and had a better reputation) and the bridge. Not sure there is enough to occupy anyone for more than a day or so unless they are happy sitting around drinking.

I live in Hua Hin, about 3 hours south of Bangkok, and you are largely getting good advice; I would agree that while Kanchanaburi is worth a visit I wouldn't stay there more than two or three days tops. In general from now on until October/November, the further south you go, the more rain you will encounter, but as others have said it is hot and humid the rest of the time. It will be slightly cooler and fresher by comparison in the north but not enough to make much difference, and generally you are better off near the coast with the sea breezes.

Depending on how long you are here for it might be worth doing some time in the north and some time near the coast, and for the latter, if like chim you aren't looking for a party town, then Hua Hin is ideal; lots of great restaurants, lots of beaches in and around, and plenty of scenery not far away as it is very close to two national parks. You can also go to a local elephant charity who offer rides through the jungle, there are two water parks, shopping for the missus, both a decent shopping centre and the more traditional Thai markets, two go kart tracks if you're into that sort of thing, golf courses coming out of your ears, kiteboarding and a load of other stuff. There is a bar scene but it is nothing in comparison to the other tourist places, and when you live here that is a good thing (I have a wife and two kids here). It is absolutely safe, and the world press and governments as always went overboard in their coverage of events here.

One thing to mention is that Hua Hin does tend to be a bit more expensive than places like Pattaya, but right now you should be able to get some great deals for hotels or guesthouses, or even renting a condo or house, depending on how long you are here for. I believe there are good flight deals too right now.

The only major downside at the moment is the exchange rate, which seems to be stuck at around 48-49 baht to the pound (this is what you can get here, probably worse in the UK) and having been here when it was between 60 and 70 it has made a big impact, but for a holiday it probably isn't so bad.

First time we went to Florida in 88 we done a bit down Miami/Keys/Everglades bit they have a road called Alligator Alley.... I reckon we must of stopped the van about 10 times getting photo's with roadside Gators.... not sure I'd do that now

Steve the place I live in Thailand s name is Rang Charokhe , It means" Crocodile Stream". We have a concrete walkway next to the stream that leads to my House. My missus assures me all the Crocodiles were killed about 40 years ago

Whe I was walking towards it the other day coming home I heard a mass of scuffling going on underneath it, I stopped where the noise came from and there was a tip of a tail sticking out about 6 inches. So I jumped up and down so it would come out and this fucking thing shot out and ran into the River it was 5 to 6 feet long and 18 inches odd across its back. I shit myself and screamed the missus came out, I told her she said it was a Monitor Lizard . The Bastards can grow up to 3 METRES long

Nice! I was putting out the towels one morning on a lounger on the beach, and this massive lizard walked past. You don't see that too often in Europe. Oh, and walking back to the room one night, heard a thud and saw this thing gripping a tree trunk, must have been a monkey?
